Liu Zhi’s Han Kitab texts

This project aims to produce the first fully digitized, annotated, and translated versions of the writings of 劉智 Liu Zhi (ca. 1670-1724), a major contributor to the Han Kitab genre of Islamic Neo-Confucian texts emerging in the 17th and 18th centuries during the Qing dynasty. In particular, this project will focus on Tianfang xingli (Nature and Principle in Islam) and Tianfang dianli (Ritual and Propriety in Islam), with an eye to comparing the treatment of the distinguishing features of Islamic metaphysics and orthopraxis between the two works, one on general principles and worldview and the other on specific rituals.
